Searching for the right photographer to capture your wedding is like finding your own personal storyteller.
You want someone who you can trust to accurately portray the loving connection you have with your soon-to-be husband or wife. These pictures last forever, and in 20 years, you want to be able to open your album, turn the pages, and see the happiest day of your life exquisitely preserved.
If you just got engaged, put choosing a photographer near the top of your to-do list. After you’ve set a date, take the time to look through multiple portfolios. Ask your married friends if they have recommendations, as well as your wedding planner, venue manager, florist, and other vendors. Once you have a list of top candidates, start to reach out and schedule interviews.
There are several questions you should ask a photographer before making your final selection. You should ask about length of coverage, turnaround time, printing rights, your photographer’s level of experience, and what is included in their different packages. “The peak season months book up to a year in advance, so it’s important to start your search early,” said Brittany Carpenter, owner of Life with a View Studio. “Ask lots of questions so there are no hidden surprises. You should feel completely at ease knowing your photographer is a professional and committed to exceeding your expectations.”
When narrowing down your choices, you also need to realize what style of photography you like best. Some photographers prefer a traditional approach, which involves taking more posed shots. Others prefer more natural documentation that doesn’t interrupt the flow of the day.
“I capture the awkward giggles and real smiles that allow couples to rekindle nostalgia when looking back at their photos,” said Savanah Loftus, owner of Savanah Loftus Photography. “These authentic moments tell the story of your wedding day.”
“Specializing in elopements and intimate stress-free beach weddings in the U.S. Virgin Islands gives me the chance to capture the magic of my couples? special wedding moments,” said Eliza Magro, owner of Eliza Magro Photography. “I enjoy capturing the natural and candid excitement, elation, and love of my couples’ vow exchanges, while also stepping in to suggest some lovely posed portraits.”
You may also notice that many professionals call themselves ‘natural light photographers.’ Rather than using a flash, a photographer will use the light that is available to them. Lighting plays a crucial role in producing quality photographs. Make sure to look through a photographer’s portfolio to determine his or her skills in utilizing light to create a stunning image.
“There is that golden light about two hours before the sun goes down that is so perfect and beautiful,” said Savanah. “This light is definitely the most flattering. It’s essential to consider light when making your photography timeline. You don’t want to be squint-ing in your pictures or have shadows on your face.”
At times, couples choose a photographer based on price alone. While it’s sometimes imperative to be budget conscious, photos are a major component of your wedding day. So when you are searching for a photographer online, don’t just pay attention to cost. Quality is everything and you don’t want to regret your decision down the road.
“Remember that food doesn’t last forever, but photos last a lifetime,” said Brittany. “If you are going to splurge on one thing, choose photography. Your wedding photos illustrate one of the most amazing days of your life.”
Another thing to look for in a portfolio is whether photos are taken from interesting and artistic angles. When looking through your images, you should be able to see your wedding day from various points of view. Each photo should transport you to that moment in time.
Lastly, once you’ve selected your photographer and storyteller, talk in depth about the details of your day. Let him or her know the creative and personal touches you’ve incorporated. Whether it’s your perfume, jewelry, cake topper, or garter, explain what’s near and dear to your heart. In the years to come, you may forget what earrings you wore, but your album will take you back, allowing you to remember everything that was special. – by Melissa Kenyon
